Fourteen year old Giles Courtenay, son of William and Helen Courtenay, joins the Claymore, a 74 gun ship of the line as a Midshipman. There he begins to learn the duties and responsibilities, together with the hardships, of a life at sea in one of His Majesty's ships. He is quickly introduced to the fight against slavery and privateers...and also how to kill in the name of the King. Ultimately commissioned as a Lieutenant, Courtenay is involved in the reverses of Toulon and Corsica, and in 1794 takes part in the major sea-battle known as the Glorious First of June. Also, he meets the first member of the family with whom he will have a feud during his career as a sea officer.

Having read both Kent's Bolitho series and the classic Hornblower series, this first installment of a series about Giles Courtenay was a disappointment. It had all the ingredients, but the author executes badly. One battle after the other pass at breakneck speed, everyone is joking and in high spirits all the time, the enemy is always beaten and people die a bit here and there without much comment. In short, no grit, no feelings, no pain, no doubt, none of what makes the classic tales in this genre so strong, or any story about war for that matter. No, I cannot recommend this novel.Product details

I was not going to write a review, but this was a really good read. Not once did I get bored with the book.
A good tale about the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars
A good book in the Hornblower tradition. A good introduction to the series. Not great, but very good.
A great, action filled, sea story. Plenty of naval tradition. A good description of life at sea. I am looking forward to the continuing adventures Giles Courtenay.
Far too idealistic.
Typical story of the Royal Navy during the late 1700s - early 1899s. A young boy progresses to mamhood under the guidance of a kindly captain, but has to deal with a cowardly, back-stabbling senior,
The whole Courtney series is a real well written series, As fan of HMS naval history, I thought it was very true era of Wooden sailing ships and men of iron. The series is an equal to Alexander Kent. Dewey Lambdin, etal.
